Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
Artist Massimo Gozzi is a devotee of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist tradition of plein air painting, a style imbued with immediacy and uniqueness. His landscapes follow this tradition, yet with a new, personal vision, in which the formal synthesis is more advanced and imbued with contemporary aesthetics. The hatching, executed with an extraordinary palette knife technique, is dense and textured, lending the representations an expressionist vibe conveyed by the painter's gesture. The color harmony is always perfect, creating a coherent and unified chromatic balance in each work. In this painting in particular, the accentuated contrast between the yellow and gold hues of the illuminated houses and boats, with the intense blue of the sky and sea, creates a lyrical nocturnal landscape.
Massimo Gozzi was born in Florence in 1946 and dedicated himself to painting from a young age, but soon turned to the teachings of master Silvestro Pistolesi (himself a student of Pietro Annigoni). He attended his studio for about three years, learning classical painting techniques while developing his drawing skills in all their forms. When he decided to break away to give free rein to his expressive style, he found emotional inspiration in oil paintings on canvas, using only a palette knife. He participated in numerous group and extemporaneous exhibitions. The "immediate" style with which he creates his views is effective and incisive, allowing him to enliven the image, which becomes full-bodied and expressive.
