Description of the work
Description of the work
The street photography genre is fully captured in the work of photographer Massimo Motta. The genre stems from the need to capture everyday life in public spaces, where human interactions are also depicted. The resulting style is dynamic and urban, revealing the evolving social dynamics and emotions that emerge in the photographs. Street photography plays extensively with light, shadow, and composition, creating interesting artistic combinations. Ultimately, the photograph invites the viewer to stand before the shot as a moment of reflection on the city and its frenetic nature. Pioneers of the genre were Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand. In this shot, Massimo Motta adopts an approach that emphasizes the expansiveness of the scene, the Piazza Duomo, encompassing the entire square and its architecture within the composition. The focus on depth of field suggests a desire to convey not only a sense of space, but also the relationship between the various elements present. The choice of linear and well-balanced shots helps guide the viewer's gaze, drawing it from the immediate foreground to the architecture in the background. Milanese photographer Massimo Motta graduated with a degree in biological sciences and then delved into photography, starting as a self-taught artist. His work, in addition to being characterized by a strong spirit of exploration, thanks to the influence of science, focuses on a new type of photography: hybrid photography, which merges painting and photography. In the latter, he has always gone well beyond aesthetics in favor of rigor and restlessness in the realm of language, engaging with the provocations of technique, technology, and the history of photography, particularly Muybridge. This resulted in several photographic series: Light and Night, where he began to develop new concepts for capturing the human figure, which is evident but not directly discernible. As the artist explains: "Painting is the material translation of my sensations; it is my inner reality that surfaces and manifests itself alongside the photographic reality. My themes concern the lonely and self-absorbed individual, anthropocentric and globalized society, but I also represent the importance of relationships with others, social bonds, and being part of a network of life."
