Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Massimo Papa's landscapes are constructed essentially through color. The surface appears almost compositionally devoid of depth, but distance is perceived through complex chromatic transitions. Even objects are pure concentrations of color. Individual brushstrokes delineate the shape of a building or a tree. Everything is resolved through a layering in which the brushstrokes, arranged on different planes, create a complex surface. The color is composed of transparent glazes and gives the landscape a certain evanescence that makes it more poetic. Despite this lyricism of brushstrokes, however, Massimo Papa, thanks to his extraordinary technique, manages to achieve a perfectly naturalistic rendering, in an intense definition of the landscape, full of descriptive details.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist Massimo Papa possesses an excellent pictorial technique. His language draws essentially on classic naturalistic rendering, but he manages to transfigure reality in a lyrical manner, thanks to the refinement of his brushstrokes.
