Adolfo Mastrovito - Fishermen

The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban and bourgeois settings, while in Italy, movements such as the Divisionists and the Macchiaioli focused on themes related to work and life in the fields. Adolfo Mastrovito is close to this tradition. His pictorial production consists primarily of scenes of country and seafaring life, depicting work in the fields or that of fishermen.

Adolfo Mastrovito's stylistic exploration can be described as a color-based expressionism. The artist reduces reality to its essentials, but does so to highlight his brilliant and dense hues. Thus, the surface presents a flat space, where various objects even overlap, creating bands of color, balanced within the overall composition by the artist's skillful direction. Color also constructs the objects; they are highly generalized, stripped of particulars, taking on an iconic and decisive character. The application is complex, with brushstrokes that, despite their two-dimensionality, somehow attempt to give the objects volume.

Painter Adolfo Mastrovito passed away in 2000. He devoted his entire artistic research to an artistic language that took reality as its subject, transfigured by color. His interpretation of everyday life was transformed into carefully balanced compositions juxtaposing different areas of color.
