The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

The lithograph exemplifies the style adopted by French painter Henri Matisse, the founder of Fauvism. It embodies all the hallmarks of the historic avant-garde movement, of which Matisse was the greatest exponent. A fundamental approach is the brutal synthesis of the subject, also inspired by an interest in exotic and tribal art, which is reduced to a silhouette whose contours have a sinuous, curvilinear rhythm. Another key element is color, always chosen for aggressive hues (hence the name Fauve) and always applied à plat, or with a compact layer.

Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in 1869 and died in Nice in 1954. He is one of the most important figures in 20th-century painting, the founder of the expressionist avant-garde movement known as Fauvism. Matisse's research draws on Gauguin but goes beyond Symbolism, arriving at a more immanent artistic language, capable of clearly expressing an emotional state and proclaiming it to the world. Hence the process of extreme synthesis that, in the Fauvist-Expressionist movement, always results in compositions with curvilinear rhythms and aggressive colors.
