Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Ischian artist Matteo Sarno's choice of seascapes featuring aquatic surfaces, allowing chromatic and luminous vibrations to reverberate, is also consistent with his stylistic choices from a formal perspective. Indeed, Sarno's painting style is based on an essentially impressionistic language that allows him to capture every single reflection on the canvas. His hatching, composed of short, dense, wavy brushstrokes, is therefore aimed at immediately depicting a perfect and unique state of light and atmosphere. All this is set within a framework of harmonious naturalism, where the landscape is the absolute protagonist of the painting, in a composition of highly lyrical value.
Matteo Sarno, Ischia 1894-1957, is one of the Ischian artists of whom very little remains, yet the influence that lives on with the great artist remains. Being born on Ischia always influenced his art; the crashing of the waves on the rocks, the screeching of seagulls beside the fishermen's nets gave rhythm to his verses and brushstrokes. The sea was the absolute protagonist of his art. Indeed, Sarno portrayed the sea of Ischia with such fidelity that the waves seemed to emerge from the canvas. During his life as an artist, he traveled extensively and lived for a long time in America without ever losing that absolute connection with the sea.
