Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal portraits in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
Maurilio Colombini's style has a strong expressionist tendency, achieved through a vigorous use of color. In his compositions, in fact, the application of paint is fundamental, rather than the drawing, in the construction of subjects and space. In this regard, everything is uniform between space and subject, which, thanks to Maurilio Colombini's technique, achieve complete fusion and interaction. Thus, subjects and space intertwine in a harmonious blend of colors. Within this balance, however, with a few brushstrokes Colombini synthesizes the objects, sketching their forms and volumes in a concise yet powerfully expressive manner.
Maurilio Colombini was born in Piombino in 1933. He is self-taught. Although he began drawing at an early age, he never attended school. He worked in a wide variety of jobs (shop boy, sailor, carpenter), but always found time to pursue his passion: painting. Maurilio Colombini's artistic output is marked by an experimental approach that leads him to use all types of paint (oil, tempera, earth, tar, pencils, body paint) and supports (paper, car hoods, cardboard, doors, chairs, walls) in his works.
