Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. As in this case, Maurizio Radici's subjects find inspiration in the world of alchemy and esotericism.
Maurizio Radici's surrealist streak unfolds in a highly original and creative manner. He develops an expressionist language. The image is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate the forms in a very tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality. This exercise in synthesis is so advanced that it almost brings the work into an informal aesthetic. Indeed, one might even call it brutalist, given the vehemence of the painterly gesture with which Maurizio Radici brings this work to life.
Maurizio Radici was born in Palazzolo sull'Oglio in 1958. He graduated with a degree in graphic design and architecture, and in the 1980s he attended the Academy of Carrara and the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergamo, where he had the opportunity to be mentored by renowned Italian masters, including Italo Ghilardi. From an early age, he was immersed in an atmosphere of intense interest in art and painting techniques, and his father, a highly accomplished color chemist, undoubtedly passed on to his son his knowledge of the subject in its most specific and sophisticated aspects. Radici is an artist who has made painting his full-time profession. From a young age, he devoted himself to painting and sculpture, and has gained extensive experience in advertising graphics as an art director. He has held countless exhibitions in Italian and international museums and galleries: Milan, Stuttgart, New York, Bergamo, Rimini, Macerata, Ancona, Bologna, Brescia, Naples, Genoa, Cagliari, Venice, London, Amsterdam, Rome, Collinas, Gambettola (Cesena-Forlì).
