Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso. Specifically, this work by Mezzacapo is inspired by the daily lives of poor people in a small town. However, we cannot truly speak of Mezzacapo's true social commitment. Indeed, although the artist provides a highly incisive depiction of these people's daily lives, his work remains more in the realm of genre painting, a lyrical celebration of a simplicity of life with a distinctly popular character.
The celebration of the simplicity of village life, imbued with essential and primary values, is directly reflected in Mezzacapo's style, which is precisely characterized by primality and essentiality. This translates into a bold and robust expressionism that leads the artist to simplify forms. The composition is constructed with essential lines serving a structural function, highlighted by thick black lines and a vertical flow. The emphasis on simplicity leads to the repetition of types in a refined stereotype, even at the physiognomic level. The faces are masks with deliberately coarse and folksy features. The folksy nature of the representation is also reflected in the application of color, which consists of thick, dense brushstrokes of muted colors, predominantly brown tones.
As we can see from an analysis of this work, the artist Mezzacapo stands out for his artistic production, which focuses on very popular subjects. This predisposition is also reflected in his style, which can be defined as a straightforward and essential expressionism.
