Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In Mića Popovic's paintings, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly. This painter's favorite subjects are the more traditional ones—landscapes or, as in this case, portraits—but everything is transfigured into an extremely experimental language, always striving for strong expressiveness.
In this work, artist Mića Popovic explores a still life of sorts, developing a language of great experimental tension. He opts for an abstract composition in which the symbolic presence of the arrow predominates. However, Popovic's artistic approach remains consistent, even in his interpretation of abstraction. The three animals, stripped of flesh and essential, are depicted in a crude manner, following an almost brutalist aesthetic. Within the composition, the artist's gestures prevail, denser and more agitated than in other works. The importance of material remains constant, in the use of dense, creamy color.
Miodrag "Mića" Popović (1923–1996) was a Serbian painter, experimental filmmaker, and a leading figure in the Yugoslav Black Wave. As a painter, Popović is best known for his Informal period (1958–1968) and his realist subjects. He also made several films in the 1960s, two of which ("Čovek iz hrastove šume" and "Delije") were banned by the government for their anti-socialist content. Mića Popović was elected a full member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1986.
