Description of the work
Description of the work
A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes and equestrian monuments, and painters have always found it a challenge to depict it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering.
In this landscape with horses, painter Michele Baretta demonstrates his strong emphasis on a style with a marked Post-Impressionist influence. The rapid brushstrokes delineate the figure's forms following a broken rhythm. The space is not perspective, but the subject, with its forms, appears on different planes. The color is dense and textured, and is also traversed by the artist with a gestural approach.
Michele Baretta was a painter originally from Vigone, born in 1916 and died in 1987. He trained in Turin at the Collegio Artigianelli. He subsequently continued to experiment as a self-taught artist. His works are held in several public collections (Civic Art Collection of Palazzo Vittone in Pinerolo, Art Museum of Vibo Valentia, Art Collection at the Museum of Cuneo, Historical Museum of Cavalry in Pinerolo, Museum of Modern Art in Sessa Aurunca), the Piedmont Region, the San Paolo Banking Institute of Turin, Juventus FC, Casino de la Vallée in Saint Vincent, Banca Torinese Balbis & Guglielmone (now Banca Intesa), and Cassa di Risparmio di Torino.
