Description of the work
Description of the work
This pair of works offers a compendium of the artistic production of the painter Michele Baretta, which focuses on traditional genres but formally displays a marked post-Impressionist/Expressionist vocation. On the one hand, landscape, one of the most explored territories by artists to communicate their perception of reality. On the other, the female figure, central to Michele Baretta's research, is depicted here in a delightful genre scene that reveals this painter's interest in popular subjects as well.
In this pair of paintings, painter Michele Baretta demonstrates his strong leanings toward a style with a marked Post-Impressionist influence. Especially in the landscape view, the rapid brushwork, composed of rapid strokes, delineates the contours of the village following a broken rhythm. The space is not perspective, but the subject is presented on multiple planes. The color is very dense and is also traversed by the artist, with a gestural approach, particularly evident in the agitated black marks. In the painting of the two women, we note a different approach, which still leads Baretta to synthesize the subject, but in a different manner. In this case, the two figures are constructed with textured layers of color, applied with a palette knife, creating a complex space. In this way, with a strong Cezanne influence, the artist can explore the formal values of the two figures with a rational process that simultaneously preserves a lively and vibrant pictorial texture. Both works feature the preponderance, typical of Baretta, of light but earthy colors.
Michele Baretta was a painter originally from Vigone, born in 1916 and died in 1987. He trained in Turin at the Collegio Artigianelli. He subsequently continued to experiment as a self-taught artist. His works are held in several public collections (Civic Art Collection of Palazzo Vittone in Pinerolo, Art Museum of Vibo Valentia, Art Collection at the Museum of Cuneo, Historical Museum of Cavalry in Pinerolo, Museum of Modern Art in Sessa Aurunca), the Piedmont Region, the San Paolo Banking Institute of Turin, Juventus FC, Casino de la Vallée in Saint Vincent, Banca Torinese Balbis & Guglielmone (now Banca Intesa), and Cassa di Risparmio di Torino.
