Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, despite using a substantially figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references.
The execution of this painting focuses entirely on formal and compositional purity, combined with an exaltation of plasticity. The figuration is highly objective; the figures almost appear sculpted from a hard, precious material. A certain archaic vein is fundamental, seemingly looking to the past in a citationist symbolism somewhat reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites. In keeping with these aesthetic principles, the colors are also bright and full of light.
Michele Cantarutti is a painter who demonstrates an excellent academic education. He possesses a technique that allows him to reach the highest levels of figuration. Conceptually, he is a painter who can be said to be close to the Symbolism of the late nineteenth century and to archaic movements such as the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
