Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
This work also highlights the extraordinary technical prowess of Michele Cascella's painting. In this view, the entire structure is determined by a highly complex graphic style that gives form to things, creates volumes, and measures space. This graphic style creates, within the composition, a system of lines that can follow a diagonal or sinuous path: these lines are useful for identifying the interactions of objects in space and their existential vibrations. This is a type of composition, therefore, designed to enhance the movement of city life with a lively technique.
Michele Cascella (Ortona 1892-Milan 1989). A painter with a remarkable career, his works are exhibited in important museums both in Italy and abroad. He experimented with numerous techniques, but his greatest achievements were with his floral subjects. Cascella's style of painting is simultaneously investigative. He remains faithful to a naturalistic approach, but his technique is dedicated to capturing all the chromatic and luminous vibrations of the floral world.
