Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Compared to Michele Cascella's usual output, this painting seems to constitute an exception in the painter's interpretation of the landscape. Unlike the meticulous, impressionistic pictorial texture with which Cascella captures all the vibrations of color and light on the canvas, in this work he seems to lean toward a more textured style. The buildings and landscape elements present a rough shape, synthesized with a few broad brushstrokes. Depth is almost only hinted at by the layers of color layered upon layer, and it is the complexity of the brushstrokes that, overlapping on different levels, delineates the objects' structure.
Michele Cascella (Ortona 1892-Milan 1989). A painter with a remarkable career, his works are exhibited in important museums both in Italy and abroad. He experimented with numerous techniques, but his greatest achievements were with his floral subjects. Cascella's style of painting is simultaneously investigative. He remains faithful to a naturalistic approach, but his technique is dedicated to capturing all the chromatic and luminous vibrations of the floral world.
