Michele Cascella - Still Life

This is a work that perfectly illustrates part of Michele Cascella's oeuvre. The painter, particularly active in graphic design, often depicts his favorite landscapes. These include Portofino, but also the landscapes of his hometown, Ortona. There, he prefers the vast expanses and fields of the hinterland to the seascapes, showing us flowery meadows resplendent with the colors of nature's multifaceted nature. In this case, the field takes a back seat to the still life in the foreground, which features a decorated glazed ceramic carafe, a fruit bowl, and a vase of flowers.

The style of the work is naturally influenced by the technique used to create it. In this case, the painter chose to create an aquatint and an etching, as we have seen from other editions of the same subject. These two techniques are often used in tandem. These are indirect engraving techniques based on acid etching a plate. A metal plate prepared with a protective coating is etched with a fine point. The etching process then proceeds, after which the plate is immersed in acid, and the unprotected areas are corroded by the acid. Ink is then applied to the plate, which settles in the grooves. The rest of the surface is cleaned, once the color is present only in the traces of the drawing.  and the design is applied to the paper using a press. While etching allows you to create a design, aquatint uses the same concept to create hues using a granulated plate. Granulation is achieved by dropping bitumen grains onto the plate. When the plate is heated, they melt and stick to it, forming a more or less dense background depending on the desired color.

The painter's distinctive traits combine superb compositional ability, combined with great mastery of drawing and vibrant colors, exemplifying especially his floral compositions, in which Cascella reaches extremely high expressive peaks, as do his views, where he achieves results of unparalleled freshness, luminosity and atmosphere.

Michele Cascella (* 1892 - † 1989) was born in Ortona, in the province of Chieti. Born into an artistic family, he demonstrated a talent for drawing and painting from a young age, evidenced by the presence of works executed before his twenties. Through experimentation with various techniques, he developed a distinctive pictorial language in the creation of landscapes and floral compositions, distinguished by a particularly powerful chromatic palette. As Pasqualone explains, part of the excitement his works inspire comes from the subtle balance he strikes with color and how he crosses the threshold between symbolism and impressionism. These works still retain their power today, captivating viewers and enthusiasts alike. Furthermore, Cascella resisted the allure of the intellectual currents of the last century; he chose to pursue a more appealing and immediate style, accessible to a wider audience, and this continues to contribute to the widespread reception and appreciation of his paintings.
