Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
The painter Michele Cicala works with a fundamentally figurative language, though one cannot truly speak of a naturalistic rendering. His subjects appear dreamlike and dreamy, though their modeling is soft and their volumes smooth; the figures stand out clearly in space without any painterly effect. This serves, somewhat like the hyperrealism of the Surrealists, to heighten the enigmatic and mysterious quality that hovers over Cicala's female figures. The composition, too, is studied in this direction, with its transcendental space.
Painter Michele Cicala was born in Rome in 1931. He is an artist gifted with an excellent figurative technique, which he uses to create complex iconographies with hidden symbolic meanings. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His works are held in private and public collections both in Italy and abroad.
