Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The painter Michele Cicala works with a fundamentally figurative language, although one cannot truly speak of a naturalistic rendering. The subject appears coldly objectified: the modeling is soft, and the smooth volumes stand out sharply in the space, characterized by pictorial effects with which the subject itself interacts. This serves, somewhat like the hyperrealism of the Surrealists, to heighten the enigmatic and mysterious quality that hovers over the scene, thanks also to the chromatic palette of blues and purples.
Painter Michele Cicala was born in Rome in 1931. He is an artist gifted with an excellent figurative technique, which he uses to create complex iconographies with hidden symbolic meanings. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His works are held in private and public collections both in Italy and abroad.
