Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, despite using a substantially figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references.
The painter Michele Cicala works with a fundamentally figurative language, though one cannot speak of a fully naturalistic rendering. The subjects appear with a cold objectivity, even though their modeling is soft and their volumes smooth; the figures stand out sharply in space without any painterly effect. This serves, somewhat like the hyperrealism of the Surrealists, to heighten the enigmatic and mysterious quality that hovers over the scene. The composition, too, is studied in this direction, with its accentuated symmetry.
Painter Michele Cicala was born in Rome in 1931. He is an artist gifted with an excellent figurative technique, which he uses to create complex iconographies with hidden symbolic meanings. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His works are held in private and public collections both in Italy and abroad.
