Description of the work
Description of the work
The subjects of Michele Circiello's works are largely conceived through a process of citation. In the phenomenology of artistic movements, citation consists of reproposing an image from the past, from the historical-artistic tradition, recontextualizing it according to the artist's sensibility. Citation has been and continues to be transversal to various contemporary artistic movements, such as Surrealism, Metaphysical Art, and Anachronism. Michele Circiello's works are inspired by the painter's connection to his homeland, exploring its roots in prehistoric artistic heritage: those of Siponto in the National Museum of Mandredonia, or those of the rock churches with their solemn icons.
This work is part of a comprehensive series that Michele Circiello has developed, drawing inspiration from artifacts from primitive times. This inspiration, however, is developed through an original recontextualization, consistent with a contemporary aesthetic. Indeed, Michele Circiello's cave painter/sculptures are constructed using a New Dada process that involves assembling various layers of wood and relief materials. On this complex surface, the artist proceeds with a pictorial-sculptural intervention that presents his archaic and primitive figures, but in a completely new context that demonstrates his connection to a symbolic influence typical of Informal Art and Abstract Expressionism. This work is also characterized by a vibrant polychromy.
Michele Circiello was born in Rocchetta Sant'Antonio in 1944 and passed away in Foggia in 2019. He studied at the Art Institute of Foggia and the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan as a student of Maestro Cantatore. He held his first solo exhibition in 1970 in Foggia and subsequently held over 100 solo shows in major galleries in major Italian and foreign cities. He exhibited at the Civic Museums of Troia, Manfredonia, Monte Sant'Angelo, and Foggia. From 1988 to 1998, in agreement with the Archaeological Superintendence of Puglia, he installed a series of sculptural works in the Paleochristian Necropolis of "Salata" in Vieste. In 2004, he created a bronze peace stele in honor of the "Fallen of Nassiriya." He also completed a bronze door for the church of San Francesco in Vieste.
