Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The style developed by Michele Lapesara in this painting highlights a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely compressed into the foreground, without allowing any spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the view, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, flesh out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them.
Michele Lapesara is an Apulian painter born in Bari in 1935. His work is distinguished by vibrant city views with a folkloristic feel. He prefers to depict important squares and monuments, especially in Apulia and his native Bari.
