Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Michele Spatuzzi's pictorial language is based on a highly cursive interpretation of phenomenal reality. The representation relies exclusively on color, with a lively, darting line that delineates the subjects, imbuing them with vibrations that are luminous yet existential. With this technique, Spatuzzi manages to create a very ethereal and light painting, in which the subject almost dissolves into the light and atmosphere, leaving room for the painter's agitated gestures, through which Spatuzzi transfigures his most intimate perception of reality. The black, calligraphic line that moves in arabesques across the surface of the work is highly distinctive, as is the palette, which leans toward shades of gray. All these characteristics indicate Michele Spatuzzi's certain inspiration from De Pisis.
Michele Spatuzzi was born in Avellino in 1922 and died in Naples in 2009. He achieved some fame during the 1970s. In 1972, he exhibited at the Champs-Élysées in Paris. He won first prize at the La Spezia Art Biennale and at the Accademia Italia.
