Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The work in question bears the signature of Alessandro Milesi, an artist who specialized primarily in portraiture, but also created vibrant and realistic scenes of everyday life.
The work is attributed to Alessandro Milesi, whose signature appears in the upper right. An artist with a strong academic background yet open to the most modern expressions of intense realism, we can see how, in this piece, the latter aspect clearly prevails. From the very beginning of the composition, with its rear-facing shot, which doesn't even allow us to glimpse the subject's face, the artist reaffirms the painting's strong immediacy and casualness. Moreover, the small dimensions are also consistent with the desire to create a work with a sketchy feel and a strong realist impact. This is confirmed by the execution, which is extremely synthetic and summary. Quick brushstrokes construct the subject and delineate the space with a few brief strokes, giving the work a highly immediate feel. Thus, everything is resolved in an intense pictorial vibration, which transcends the contingency of describing details to express, through the application of color, the complexity of reality.
The work has been attributed to Alessandro Milesi, a Venetian painter who lived between 1856 and 1945. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. In 1881, he participated in the National Exhibition of Milan and, in 1887, in the National Artistic Exhibition of Venice. He thus established himself as a follower of Giacomo Favretto's work, adopting a highly realistic style but with a greater focus on international pictorial innovations. From the beginning of the new century, he established himself as a portraitist among the Venetian bourgeoisie, creating portraits of writers, musicians, and actors in the following decades.
