Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is clearly exemplary of the artist Miljenko Bengez's oeuvre. In his research, sensory reality is subjected to a mechanical reconstruction that draws primarily on Picasso and Cubism. The most interesting aspect is that, in his figures, Bengez manages to combine aspects of both Analytical Cubism (in the geometric decomposition of subjects within a complex space) and Synthetic Cubism (in the accentuated abstraction of figures, reduced to a set of lines and geometric shapes). Miljenko Bengez's post-Cubism echoes the fantastical geometries of Paul Klee and the Neoplasticism of Mondrina. Indeed, his subjects, beyond their purely mechanical character, convey a fanciful sense of fantasy in their totemic appearance and consistently vibrant color palette.
Miljenko Bengez, a Croatian artist born in 1954 in Zagreb, held his first painting exhibition in 1987 at the Circle of Cultural Workers and Scientists in Ljubljana. In 1990, he moved to Florence, Italy, where he furthered his studies in oil painting restoration with Professor Leonardo Passeri. He also collaborated with several Milanese art galleries, including the "L' Incisione" gallery, which published the monograph "Bengez" in 2001.
