Description of the work
Description of the work
The work was created using the Décollage technique, used by various artists since the 1950s, which involves layering posters or flyers, which are then gradually torn away. This technique undoubtedly reflects several aesthetic trends typical of the mid-20th century: first, the poetics of the object, as it involves the use of discarded materials from consumer society; second, the interest in mass media typical of Pop Art; and finally, this artistic practice also involves a gestural component, as the artist tears down the posters.
The work is part of Mimmo Rotella's famous decollage series, in this case mass-produced yet retaining the artist's distinctive style. The object, namely the overlapping posters, is reconfigured by the artist through the act of tearing. This practice simply introduces the accidental nature of reality directly and suddenly into the artwork, giving it a new meaning. The tears, which mimic the ravages of time or weather on the posters, shift the work from an abstract dimension to the concrete realm of existence.
Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro 1918 - Milan 2006) was an artist deeply engaged in experimenting with new artistic languages in the second half of the 20th century. After some experiments with phonetic poetry, he created his first décollages in 1954. In Paris, he participated in the Nouveau Réalisme movement, and his interest in the poetics of mechanical processes was also expressed through the creation of Mec-art, or processes of serial image transcription.
