Description of the work
Description of the work
The work was created using the décollage technique, used by various artists since the 1950s, which involves layering posters or flyers, which are then gradually torn away. This technique is undoubtedly linked, first and foremost, to the poetics of the object, as it involves the use of discarded items from consumer society, but also to Pop Art's interest in mass media, as well as to an artistic gesture, as Rotella intervenes directly, tearing down the posters.
This work is part of Mimmo Rotella's famous décollage series. The object, composed of overlapping posters, is reconfigured by the artist through the act of tearing. This practice simply introduces the accidental nature of reality directly and suddenly into the artwork, giving it a new meaning. The tears, which mimic the ravages of time or weather on the posters, shift the work from an abstract dimension to the concrete realm of existence. In addition to the popular series, in which the artist uses film posters and plays with pop-culture icons, there are other décollages, like this one, in which Rotella has also experimented with different languages. In this series, we can see how the poetics of the poster-object remains at the core of Rotella's work. However, compared to the strong pop influence of the posters, an abstract-expressionist aesthetic prevails in these works. The tearing gesture itself becomes more frenetic and repetitive, leaving little room for interpretation of the images. Furthermore, the décollages are subjected to stains or other pictorial interventions of a sign-like nature, the result of a strong pictorial gesture.
Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro 1918-Milan 2006) was an artist deeply engaged in experimenting with new artistic languages in the second half of the 20th century. After some experiments with phonetic poetry, he created his first décollages in 1954. In Paris, he participated in the Nouveau Réalisme movement, and his interest in the poetics of mechanical processes was also expressed through the creation of Mec-art, or processes of serial image transcription.
