Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
Mino Maccari subjected the subject to a brutal synthesis; the figure is reduced to its bare essentials. The forms are drawn with a broad, coarse line, with a nervous, squared outline. The space is completely two-dimensional. There are very few points of contact with phenomenal reality, and no concessions are made to naturalism. We are therefore faced with a type of interpretation that prioritizes the expressive, almost violent, force of the work over its verisimilitude.
Mino Maccari was born in Siena in 1898 and died in Rome in 1989. A prominent figure in Italian culture, he was a writer, painter, and journalist. His artistic career flourished especially after World War II. In 1962, he was appointed president of the Accademia di San Luca, and a solo exhibition of his work was held in New York. Mino Maccari produced a vast body of drawings, prints, and watercolors, always characterized by an expressionistic flair for violent drawing and a vibrant pictorial interpretation.
