Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconographic theme of the work refers to the subject of the "Lamentation over the Dead Christ," which became popular starting in the 14th century. The "Lamentation" is usually a group scene featuring more or less fixed figures (Mary, the apostle John, Mary Magdalene and the pious women, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus). In the present painting, however, we have a variant featuring only the figure identified as Mary Magdalene. In fact, the fact that the woman is wearing a dark dress and has her head covered by a veil leads us to believe the figure is that of the Virgin Mary. In this case, with the presence of the Madonna mourning the body of the dead Christ, we could speak of the iconographic theme of the "Pietà."
The work is truly fascinating from a stylistic perspective. Artist Miran Brown stands out for his highly original and refined personal language, in which a figurative interest in formal values blends seamlessly with a certain expressionistic synthesis. Indeed, in the composition, the volumes of the two subjects are clearly highlighted and concrete in space. We see this in Christ's expansive chest, but also in the complex drapery of the female figure. Brown, however, places these sculptural presences in a space so compressed that it appears almost two-dimensional. Therefore, the two bodies are forced to adapt to a complex, non-unique space, resulting in a composition of great expressive impact. The work's expressionism is also achieved through a certain degree of synthesis of the subjects, who are not reproduced in their actual physiognomic details, but take on an iconic aspect that transfigures them into a dimension with broader meanings than those contingent on the scene depicted. Even from a strictly formal perspective, the artist employs a highly complex approach that further characterizes, expressively, the synthesis of the two subjects. Regarding the palette in this work, Miran Brown favors muted, neutral tones that are well-suited to the subject matter and his sober, austere expressionism.
The artist Miran Brown, as we can see from the analysis of this work, stands out for a very interesting formal research in which the exaltation of formal values is combined with a synthetic and expressionist rendering.
