Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. In this painting, the ever-original painter Miria Malandri conceives a version of the female nude inspired by a Symbolist/Surrealist aesthetic. The work's iconography is complex, visionary, and charged with hidden meanings.
Painter Miria Malandri's style is essentially figurative, aiming to reproduce reality in every aspect and detail. It can therefore be broadly defined as hyperrealist, due to its desire to depict the perceptible world objectively. Indeed, unlike her other works, in which a certain atmosphericism always prevails, in this painting the artist emphasizes the objectivity of the representation, highlighting the plastic qualities of the figure. This choice is consistent with the character of this work, which, as we have seen, draws on a Surrealist aesthetic. A fundamental characteristic of Surrealism is precisely that of realizing its visions in a hyperrealistic form, in order to give images a deliberately illusory concreteness (how could we not cite Salvador Dalí in this sense?). Furthermore, Miria Malandri demonstrates a perfect ease with this highly plastic and objective pictorial style, thanks to her extraordinary technique.
Miria Malandri is an artist originally from Forlì, where she was born in 1946 and where she lives and works. She trained in Anatomical Drawing at the University of Bologna. Her initial interest focused on the faces of acrobats and circus performers. Since 1975, her work has focused on her memories, transforming old family photos into paintings. Miria Malandri takes fragments of reality and transfers them to canvas, enlarging or de-framing them, thus seeking to visually represent the mechanisms of memory.
