GOLD MIRROR TOWELS

The use of mirrors in the visual arts allows for the juxtaposition between the eye and the gaze, between seeing and understanding, between exteriority and interiority. In Mirror Towels, 2020, exhibited at the Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in St. Petersburg, a stretch of hand-engraved dishcloths takes shape, forging sculptural draperies "embroidered" on mirrored surfaces. The process of producing Mirror Towels leads the artist to a continuous reflection on her own image and a consequent process of exploration and examination of herself, her perspectives and experiences, marking a moment of profound introspection. Each individual mark reflects a state of mind. Through bold, strong marks, crooked or weak marks, through these ritual gestures, synonymous with purification, the fallible and unbridgeable nature of feeling is reflected. The mirror provides answers, opens a parallel world of desires or nightmares, amplifies space, duplicates it, and deforms it. But in the end, through the satin finish and the effect of heat, almost all of the mirrored surface is erased, leaving room only for the positivity of the beauty of the embroidery, allowing us to be transported by the soft sinuosity of the delicate drapes that illuminate dreams, expectations, hopes.
