Modolo - Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The painting demonstrates Modolo's experimental approach to landscape. There's a sort of expressionist reduction, stripping phenomenal reality to its essential elements. Thus, the composition becomes a sort of collage of colored layers, painted in a compact manner. Only in depicting the bushes does the artist display greater mobility, using thick, yet powerfully synthetic brushstrokes.
