Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is part of a trend in which artist Umberto Montini is fascinated by urban and rural settings, imbued with a raw, everyday reality. Likewise, his pictorial language is consistent with his treatment of these types of subjects, adopting the subdued, authentic tones of direct realism, free from idealistic filters. The composition is expertly set within a concrete space, where objects are harmoniously arranged. Formally, too, Montini adopts an exquisitely realist tone in these types of paintings. His decidedly painterly approach manages to describe reality precisely and objectively, simultaneously capturing atmospheric and existential vibrations. In this way, the artist conveys the truth of sensory data while respecting the complexity of the human gaze.
Umberto Montini was born in Milan in 1897 and died in Busto Arsizio in 1978. Forced by difficult economic conditions, he attended evening classes at Brera while simultaneously working in a lithographic laboratory, until he managed to enroll at the Academy, where he graduated in 1924. From that moment on, he exhibited regularly at the exhibitions of the Permanente in Milan and the Sindacali in Lombardy, emerging on the international scene with his participation in the Venice Biennials (1928, 1930), the Barcelona exhibition of 1929 and the Universal Exhibition in Paris of 1937; in 1938 and 1956 he also tested the South American market by travelling to Peru and Ecuador.
