Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This is a work with a very traditional approach, starting with its spatial structure, based on principles of orthogonal perspective. It's clear that the artist placed utmost importance on drawing, which largely constitutes the compositional framework of the work. The artist demonstrates a remarkable ability to represent what he sees in every minute detail, with a high degree of objectivity. Consequently, little room is left for pictorial effects, so much so that the colors appear vibrant without atmospheric nuances.

Morandi displays a highly technical, academically trained artist. He remains faithful to a concept of art based on the imitation of nature and allows little subjectivity. His style is therefore highly realistic, yet shows some traits of idealization. His technique places great emphasis on drawing, which forms the main framework of his paintings.
