Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. The study of the human figure and portraiture has occupied a large part of Vincenzo Muscatello's artistic production. The works collected in this portfolio offer a sampling of his favorite subjects: figures of men and women in imaginative settings with a certain taste for the grotesque, and scenes inspired by the world of puppetry.
Artist Vincenzo Muscatello has developed his own unique stylistic signature, focusing particularly on the study of the human figure. His portraits do not strive for perfect naturalistic rendering, but rather offer a cursory treatment of sensory information, tending toward expressionism. However, despite this expressionistic approach, based primarily on color, Muscatello's characters have an almost caricatural quality, reminiscent of fairy-tale illustrations, which is also reflected in his ambiguous definition of space. All this, then, results in a magical definition of reality, which we also find in his scenes dedicated to puppet theater. In this sense, the subject itself draws us into the realm of the grotesque, an element further accentuated by the artist's imaginative compositions.
Vincenzo Muscatello was born in Lucca in 1941. He lived almost his entire life in Capannori, where he passed away in 2014. A teacher at the Lucca Art School, he is considered one of the founders of the Lucca School. He exhibited his work in numerous shows throughout Italy, always receiving great critical and public acclaim. His work has been discussed by critics such as Antonio Lo Faro, Arianna Luporini, Corrado Marsan, Nicola Micieli, Marco Palamidessi, Mario Rocchi, and Romano Silva.
