Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
As we can see from this painting, Nando Chiappa employs a process of reduction of phenomenal reality in order to achieve a perfect formal balance. Thus, the entire painting becomes a delicate interplay of color juxtapositions and balanced tones. To achieve this, Chiappa forces nature into an expressive medium and simplifies it, highlighting its purely aesthetic values. Thus, the urban space becomes an elegant composition of lines and geometric shapes. From a chromatic perspective, the work also presents a balanced blend of light and luminous hues.
Nando Chiappa was a painter originally from Cinisello Balsamo, born in 1934 and passed away in 2017. His painting career began in the 1970s, when he began his self-taught career, frequenting the masters Leonardo Spreafico and Osvaldo Pivetta. He later gained great popularity, exhibiting his works in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. He received the Ambrogino d'Oro from the City of Milan, was named a Knight of the Italian Republic, and in 2007 was awarded the Spiga d'Oro civic honor for his strong connection to Cinisello Balsamo. Among his favorite subjects was the Balsamo countryside, so much so that he was nicknamed the "painter of the fields," but was also known as the "painter of altar boys."
