Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The work is a perfect example of the most expressionist phase of painter Nando Coletti's production. Reality is reduced in an almost brutal manner. Objects are outlined with a black, stylized, and nervous line. The color is applied with highly animated strokes. The surface is practically two-dimensional, and the execution focuses on emotional impact. In fact, the colors do not reflect phenomenal reality but have a fundamentally spiritual value. Typical of Coletti is the livid and cold chromaticism in shades of purple and gray.

Nando Coletti was a painter from Treviso, born in 1907 and died in 1979. Self-taught, he made his debut in 1925. In 1935, his work was exhibited at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation in Venice. In 1948, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Biennale. From then on, exhibitions followed throughout Italy, with important shows in Rome, Florence, and Milan.
