Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The stylistic approach to the subject matter falls squarely within an aesthetic that can be defined as naive. The naive artist is, by definition, self-taught, someone who hasn't attended an art academy but has found inspiration within themselves. Stylistically, this translates into figurative painting that offers a simplified interpretation of reality, with infantile and unconsciously primitivist overtones. However, even the naive artist, in his spontaneity and naiveté, possesses a self-awareness that leads him to develop a very specific aesthetic language, distinguishing it from amateurism.
Natale Fornasari was a painter originally from Codisotto, born in 1927 and passed away in 2010. He is considered one of the most important representatives of naive art in Italy. The turning point in Fornasari's artistic career—he never left his job as a farmer in Codisotto—came in 1973 when, at an exhibition in Milan, he was approached by a publisher to illustrate—naturally in naive style—the story of Don Quixote of La Mancha. Between 2006 and 2008, Fornasari unexpectedly received enormous satisfaction when two letters of congratulations for that work arrived from none other than the Spanish Prime Minister and the French President.
