Description of the work
Description of the work
The bull in art is a subject with ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, it also frequently appears in the works of ancient civilizations, particularly the Minoan-Cretan civilization. In contemporary art, Picasso's studies of the bull are famous. This composition clearly demonstrates the quality of Arfelli's mosaic technique. While reviving an ancient compositional technique, the artist renews it with a personal interpretation. Unlike traditional mosaics that completely fill the surface, Arfelli's mosaics play with the empty spaces created by the black background. In this way, the composition acquires a pared-down, minimalist quality, more in keeping with a contemporary aesthetic. Natalino Arfelli (1922) is undoubtedly an academically trained painter who places great importance on drawing and the possibilities of modeling and investigating plastic values. His style favors broad layers of bright colors that allow the figures to stand out clearly within the composition.
