Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
As we can see from this painting, Nazzareno Cugurra's artistic language is decidedly minimalist. For him, reproducing reality means reducing it, seeking the true essence of objects. This exploration is essentially accomplished through the painterly gesture, which, with a dense brushstroke, gives form to things with just a few strokes. Completing the picture is Cugurra's explicitly chiaroscuro palette, which further enhances this sense of intimacy.
Nazzareno Cugurra was born in Verona in 1924, but his career was spent primarily in Naples, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1951, he participated in the Rome Quadrennial and in 1956 in the Venice Biennale. He moved to Rome in the late 1950s. In 1954, he won the Premio Città di Pizzo and in 1956, he exhibited in Brescia at the "La Loggia" gallery with Maccari and Vangelli.
