Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
A stylistic and formal analysis reveals a prevailing seventeenth-century spirit. This work undoubtedly draws inspiration from the great naturalism of the seventeenth century, which, aiming to correct the supposed errors of Mannerism, drew directly from the great masters of the late Renaissance. Hence, the desire to achieve a completely naturalistic rendering. The artist thus creates a perfect official portraiture, fully adhering to the principles dictated by court painting of his time. The subject's depiction, in fact, has a decidedly austere character, and the composition of the work seems focused on highlighting the elegance of the pose and clothing rather than psychological introspection. Formally, the dark chromaticism typical of seventeenth-century painting prevails.
From an analysis of the work, we can see that the artist who created this painting possesses an excellent hand in the naturalistic rendering of his subjects, especially in the description of facial features. However, the definition of the subject is somewhat rigid, also deriving from the general nature of official portraiture in the 17th century.
