Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this work was conceived through a citationist approach. In the phenomenology of artistic movements, citationism consists of reproposing an image from the past, from the historical-artistic tradition, recontextualizing it according to the artist's sensibility. Citationism has been and continues to be transversal to various contemporary artistic movements, such as Surrealism, Metaphysical Art, and Anachronism. In this work, artist Nicola Spirito draws inspiration from the famous mural paintings in the Palace of Knossos, depicting acrobats performing exercises on a bull.
In this work, Nicola Spirito's artistic process consists of selecting images from the art of the past and reconfiguring them in his paintings. From this starting point, Nicola Spirito leads the viewer on a journey into the ancient world, discovering a connection with our Mediterranean roots, thus establishing a strong connection between past and present. All this, however, presupposes the artist's reworking, in order to avoid a simple exercise in pedantry. From this perspective, Spirito imbues his quotation with new meaning, first and foremost by giving a precise artistic value to the pictorial material (a fundamental element in contemporary aesthetics). Thus, the entire ancient image takes on a new meaning, thanks to the pictorial intervention inspired by the gestures of Abstract Expressionism.
Artist Nicola Spirito stands out for his citationist pictorial production in which he recontextualizes works of the past according to an expressionist and abstract poetics.
