Nino Mandrici's artistic production, which was expressed above all in his sculptural activity, was particularly focused on the study of the human figure (his "Maternities" are famous). Mandrici represents it either isolated or as the protagonist of refined genre scenes, such as the present one inspired by a jazz band.
Nino Mandrici's artistic language can be considered expressionist in every respect, as it is based on a marked synthesis of sensory data. The contingent details of the figures are lost in favor of a simplified representation that takes on broader meanings, determined by the balance of shapes and colors. This is particularly evident in his graphic work, two splendid examples of which are shown here. The human figure is conceived with a purity and simplicity of line that gives rise to a refined composition, filled with vivid and vibrant colors. In this simplification, the figures are broken down and reassembled in a desire for exploration that also engages space.
Nino Mandrici, born in 1930, is undoubtedly one of Italy's most iconic sculptors. He has exhibited at the Vittoriale, in Spoleto during the Festival of Two Worlds, in Israel, America, China, London, and elsewhere internationally. He lived in Venezuela, carving wood for a Guajiro Indian tribe; in an Israeli kibbutz, under Syrian mortar fire; in Venezuela, working with wood from the Amazon rainforest; and on the Cherokee Indian reservation in the Blue Mountains. In each of these places, sculptor Nino Mandrici learned to draw emotion from materials and ancient artisanal wisdom, then transforming it into art.
