Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Nino Villanti is a master of Symbolist landscapes. The bare, or nearly so, twisted tree is the undisputed protagonist in his views. These trees, laden with branches to an incredible degree, embody an existential complexity, standing alone in a rarefied landscape devoid of human presence. This Symbolist and existential complexity inherent in Nino Villanti's trees is also reflected in the technical and formal execution of his works. This artist's style, in fact, stems from a naturalistic vision, yet transcends it into a symbolic dimension. His style is objective and spare, with clear chromaticism and a "magical realist" atmosphere.
Antonino (known as Nino) Villanti, born in Palermo in 1921, moved to Pisa in 1955 where he lived, worked, and established himself as a painter, before dying in 2009. His pictorial production is distinguished by a large number of symbolist landscapes, where the existential figure of the tree is always the protagonist.
