Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal depictions in art have ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In Novella Parigini's paintings, the most recurring subjects, besides cats, are flowers and female figures.
Both in terms of the subject matter and the execution method, the work reveals a certain naive attitude on the part of the artist. Novella Parigini's desire to achieve a childishness in the representation is evident, with the aim of imbuing the artwork with primordial values of purity and innocence. This is expressed through a loose technique that resolves the subjects with a few quick but incisive chalk or pastel strokes. The use of this particular technique gives the figures an ethereal consistency, almost as if they were vaporous and ephemeral apparitions. The use of a black background also contributes to this effect, allowing the pastels' chromatic nuances to stand out more, thus accentuating the fusion between the subject and the space in which they interact.
The figure of Novella Parigini (1921-1993) differs markedly from the conventional naïve artist, who is typically a social outcast, if not outright marginalized. Parigini's life, however, is characterized precisely by the high society of her experiences, both in Rome and Paris. And it is in this sense, then, that her pursuit of pure and simple formal values in her artistic career should be interpreted. First and foremost, the hedonism typical of the Sienese aristocracy from which Parigini descended comes into play, making painting a game in itself, a playful exercise to be practiced with a refined and fascinating childishness. But art, for Parigini, is also a reflection of her free, unconventional life: hence her desire to pursue pure aesthetic canons that break all ties with the past.
