Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography presented here is a woman with a child and a cat wrapped in a circle that appears to be fabric. The subject is not new to the artist, who often uses these figures. Certainly, his naive gaze, which is also conveyed by his linework, is intended to evoke a childishness, a primordial design, and the purity it evokes. The addition of the child, in fact, brings us back to this very dimension, to a gaze and a holistic artistic vision.
The naive style of painting found in the work of Novella Parigini is due to the extremely simplified design. In addition to the two-dimensionality of the canvas, created by the gold and silver tones that, like a sacred icon, tend to remain flat, the artist's composition creates an interplay of gazes between the viewer and the characters within the work.
The figure of Novella Parigini (1921-1993) differs markedly from the conventional naïve artist, who is typically a social outcast, if not outright marginalized. Parigini's life, however, is characterized precisely by the high society of her experiences, both in Rome and Paris. And it is in this sense, then, that her pursuit of pure and simple formal values in her artistic career should be interpreted. First and foremost, the hedonism typical of the Sienese aristocracy from which Parigini descended comes into play, making painting a game in itself, a playful exercise to be practiced with a refined and fascinating childishness. But art, for Parigini, is also a reflection of her free, unconventional life: hence her desire to pursue pure aesthetic canons that break all ties with the past.
