There is mourning on the Riviera delle Palme, but also throughout the Piceno region and the art world, for the passing of maestro Francesco Colella . Born in San Benedetto 59 years ago, he debuted as a painter in 1999, establishing his national prominence with a series of exhibitions. His last major work is the illustration of the panels that, together with two other artists, comprise the book 'Pinocchi's Journey to the Picene Lands', which will be presented next Saturday at 5:00 PM in the Kursaal hall in Grottammare. His life, made difficult since he was 30 by an illness that had also prevented him from using one arm, had been marked by hospitalizations, sometimes for long and complicated periods, but he always managed to overcome the various crises. This was what his family, friends, and lovers of his art, so full of color and soulful emotion, hoped would happen this time as well. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Francesco Colella passed away at seven yesterday morning in the medical ward of the Madonna di Soccorso hospital in San Benedetto, leaving a great void. Colella didn't consider himself an artist, but a man who painted because he felt the need to, to convey on canvas what was in his soul. His works were nostalgic images that usually spoke of the hard work of man, particularly scenes of seafaring life, faces marked by the sun and fatigue, flights of free-flying seagulls heading toward infinity, crouching nudes, traveling horses, and slumbering boats.
