Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Artist Ottavio Bigiaretti's execution of this landscape is driven by a desire to achieve a realism free of subjective filters in its representation. For this reason, the subject of the work appears to be a casual, unpredictable view, with the glimpse framing a hedge between the walls of two houses, lacking depth and leaving the viewer's gaze unrestricted. Formally, too, the artist seeks to respect the complexity of the human gaze, and for this reason, he eschews an idealized, classical pictorial style in favor of a post-impressionistic approach. The brushstrokes are thick and give structure to the elements. The space is compressed, and the same brushstroke, arranged on different planes, constructs the volume of the objects.
In the work of painter Ottavio Bigiaretti, a sense of a naked reality prevails, free from subjective elaborations or formal idealizations. For this reason, his subjects are not at all picturesque, but rather fragments of reality taken as they are, almost casually. Consistent with this vision, his pictorial style is complex, with post-impressionist influences.
