Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is a bas-relief adaptation of the painting "The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus," executed by Peter Paul Rubens around 1617 and housed at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. The myth depicted in the canvas is thought to be that of the abduction of the Leucippides by the Dioscuri.
The bas-relief's execution strives for a perfect rendition of Rubens's model, which it achieves through remarkable technique. The artist emphasizes the subject's volumes and the complex movement within the work, creating a balanced relationship. The details are meticulously crafted and the anatomical renderings are strikingly plastic. The artist's sculptural technique is characterized by a pronounced use of color. The figures thus appear truly solid and create their own space within the work. The entire work is constructed on curved compositional lines, fully in keeping with the spirit of the Baroque period.
