Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color.
Omero Quarati's style is highly recognizable in all his works. His vision necessarily begins with reality (a landscape, a portrait, a nude), but this same reality is completely transfigured through his highly personal process of abstraction. In his figurative works, the subjects' volumes are enhanced, almost inflated, by careful drawing, so that the composition resolves into a system of rounded forms. But the artist intervenes with his pictorial gesture, transforming the entire surface of the work. Through an elaborate technique, all the elements of the painting are brought together in a dense, material atmosphere that transports the entire reality into a visionary and poetic dimension. This is also thanks to the color palette, based on warm tones, with sulfurous and golden nuances.
Omero Quarati was a painter born in Alessandria in 1920. He trained at the Brera Academy in Milan, under the guidance of Pompeo Borra. From 1968, he taught at the Liceo Artistico in Alessandria, and from 1970 to 1972, he held the chair of chromatology at Brera. In 1974, he joined the Grum 74 group with Bramati, Cremonini, and Lo Staino, participating in several exhibitions. In 1980, he won the Luciano Richetti Prize in Piacenza.
