Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.
José Ortega's artistic language tends to reconstruct the world through a process that is simultaneously mechanomorphic and biomorphic. Space in his works is geometric and features a carefully balanced palette, almost like a Paul Klee landscape. The characters and objects that move within it have a more fluid and elastic structure, more reminiscent of biological life forms. Compositionally, Ortega also exploits the relief and roughness of the medium in his graphic works.
José Garcia Ortega was a Spanish artist born in Arroba de los Montes in 1921 and died in Paris in 1990. His fame is primarily linked to his art's civic engagement with the Spanish Civil War. He was exiled in the 1960s and moved to Paris. His first exhibition in Italy was held in 1964 by Antonello Trombadori in Rome. In the following years, he held numerous exhibitions in Philadelphia, Toronto, St. Louis, Zurich, Turin, and Brussels. Beginning in 1973, he experimented with new sculptural techniques in a workshop in the Sassi of Matera.
